Let’s face it, we all love to go to the movies.  We all love the theater experience: the large screens and the full surround sound experience, but when you think of how much a movie ticket costs these days it can be quite discouraging.  If you were to break down how much you spend at the theater per month you may actually be pretty surprised.  Below are a few tips on how to save money at the movie theater to make your experience more enjoyable.

1)  Eat before you go to the movie theater

This is one of the biggest ways to save money on your trip to the movie theater. Although we may complain about the cost of a movie ticket these days , often times we spend even more money on the cost of concessions.  You can save quite a bit on each trip just by skipping that box of popcorn or that extra large coke.

2)  Take advantage of  Matinees

You can usually save a few bucks by viewing a movie during matinee times, but it also has a few other benefits.  Not only are tickets usually cheaper, but theaters are usually less crowded and less noisy during these times.

3)  Consider a Bargain theater

Another great value is the bargain theater.  Back in the day bargain theaters used to be grimy and dirty $1 theaters that would play a movie several weeks or months after the films release.  These theaters  would usually have smaller screens and bad sound.  Nowadays  these discount theaters have changed and now tend to offer the same opening weekend movies as the bigger theaters as well as comparable screens and sound systems.  Many of these theaters today are just as good as the large theater down the street, but can be half the price.  You can do a internet search for “discount movies theaters” in your area to find the one near you.

4) Join movie discount clubs

Many of the major movie theater have frequent purchase cards that award you points every time you purchase a movie ticket.  These points go towards free popcorn and drinks to free or discounted movie tickets.  The 2 major theater programs are AMC and Regal theaters

5) Free movie screenings

Many of the larger cities offer free movie screening weekly.  This is an opportunity for the movie studios the get audience feedback and make last minute changes to the final movie before final release.  This is a great opportunity for you to take advanatage of a free movie and also give your feedback as well.  Several websites to check out for free movie screenings  in your area are:  Filmmetro Freemoviescreenings.net and Gofobo.com

6) Entertainment.com

I’m sure you have heard of Entertainment.com.  They offer annual special discount books that you can purchase to receive large discounts on restaurants, shopping, entertainment and travel.  They offer bulk movie ticket discounts as well as movie tickets for only $6.

I always wear cargo shorts/pants. The pockets act as great ways to store an extra Coke, or maybe some Milk Duds.
